1) Have You Filed Your Federal Tax Form 990?
Almost all PTAs are due to file the 2023 Federal Tax Form 990 by November 15, 2024. Even though PTAs don't pay federal income tax, they are still required to file Form 990 with the IRS to maintain their nonprofit status. To clarify a common misconception about taxes, PTAs do pay sales tax when purchasing items; however, schools are exempt from paying sales tax on purchases.
Affiliation Reports were due October 31, 2024. VP of Affiliation Philip Davis will email the 501(c)(3) Validation Letters to all who are 100% filed within the next two weeks. Email Philip at Affiliation@LouisianaPTA.org for further help.
2) Apply for the $750 LAPTA Literacy Grant
The $750 LAPTA Literacy Grants help Local PTA Units host literacy programs at their affiliated schools. Deadline to apply is November 22, 2024. Literacy skills in Louisiana are unacceptably low, and LAPTA and National PTA are making literacy opportunities a priority for our children. While a PTA can use the grant for any program, there are established programs developed by National PTA at PTA.org/Programs.
3) October Membership Challenge
There were 31 PTAs who qualified for the October Swamp Monster Monthly Membership Challenge! All qualifying PTAs went into a $100 drawing and the winner for October is Abney Little Spartans PTA in Slidell!!
The total membership for LAPTA is 6,570 as of November 1. This is just about 60% of our goal of 11,000 members. Keep hitting up car line and asking families to join PTA. Email Membership Chair Peggy Mauer for more ideas and tips at Membership@LouisianaPTA.org.
4) Healthy Minds Newsletter - Issue #1!
The LAPTA's Healthy Minds State Champion Jessica Latin just produced the very first issue of her newsletter. Please take a minute to check it out. This issue highlights 1) Men's Mental Health and 2) Holiday Blues and Grief: Navigating the Season. LAPTA will share the newsletter in its own email, or view it now.

5) Reflections Theme Search
Share this graphic with your students to have them submit the next theme for the National PTA Reflections Arts Program. That's the only thing you need to do! LAPTA will select 5 winners to advance to National PTA who will pick one final winner. As always, there is also the Reflections Arts Program which is a great way to enhance the arts education for all students.
